It's thanks to all the incredible volunteers, artists, musicians, dancers, sponsors, and especially the many fine folk who attended that the events were a huge success!A PACIFIC PERSPECTIVE Friday August 28th, 7 pm Solstice Café 529 Pandora By Donation "A Pacific Perspective" was an intimate celebration of the unique and diverse cultures of the Pacific, and a chance to explore our ties to this magnificent ocean. With a mouth-watering menu of Pacific-inspired treats specially created by David Cardinal of Solstice Cafe, the evening began with a spectacular performance of traditional dances from an array of island nations by the Pearls of the South Pacific. Two local bands, Shadebust and No-Issues, shared traditional as well as contemporary coastal music infused with reggae, calypso, funk, and New Caledonian Kaneka music. This coastal fusion was also on display in a collection of recycled skateboards and custom made skimboards handpainted by West Coast artists, celebrating the ancient Polynesian sport of he'e nalu and its expression in the unique surf culture of the BC Coast. In addition, the Victoria Poetry Slam Team and Janet Marie Rogers shared several outstanding spoken word performances exploring what it means to be Pacific people. These outstanding performances aided Pacific Peoples' Partnership in raising awareness about the South Pacific and how we can support Indigenous communities while protecting the fragile ecosystems upon which they depend. REEF OR MADNESS! Saturday August 29th, doors @ 9pm White Eagle Hall 90 Dock St. at Niagara $13 This year's Reef or Madness was a night of smokin' hot mayhem with the finest surf, ska, and reggae beats on the island! Brave New Waves, Great White Shark, ARISE and DJ Hayden kept the dance floor bumping all night, while Blank Space wowed the crowd with his eternally fresh beatbox melodies. Spectacular firespinning displays meant even those outside were treated to dazzling entertainment. A surprise performance of African dance and drumming by Moondance really made those jaws drop in the crowd! Tasty tropical treats were provided by Caribbean Village, and members of the SurfRider Foundation were on hand to talk to guests about their beach cleanup and environmental education work. Live art and airbrushing performances, as well as an auction of beautiful skimboards and skateboards handpainted by Victoria’s best young artists truly made this a multi-dimensional showcase of local talent and a party to remember! All funds raised through the events went to support the climate justice initiatives of Pacific Peoples' Partnership, enabling the work of our Indigenous partners in Polynesia and Melanesia who are being forced to adapt to catastrophic climate change. Many thanks to our generous sponsors- Driftwood Brewery, Level Ground Trading, Thrifty Foods, Sitka, Coastline, Threesixty Boardshop, The Noodle Box, Hemp & Co., and many more! Look out for One Wave next year- bigger, mightier, and coming to a shore near you! |
